TEST FOR DETERMINING FLASH POINT ( PENSKY MARTIN APPARATUS)
- A potion of lub oil sample is slowly heated at a
constant rate, continue stiring.
- A small flame is directed through a open shutter at
regular temp interval.
- Now the temp above which the vapor ignites gives the
flash point temp.
- For new oil its 220'c, if it get reduced indicate fuel oil contamination
- It is done using BN test kit.
- In this test they create chemical reaction of a reagent
with the alkaline lub oil additives like calcium to produce pressure rise.
- Test.
1. 10 ml lub oil is mixed with 10 ml of reagent.
2. 10 ml of another reactive reagent is placed in a plastic
cup, that floats on top of the oil and reagent.
3. Now the test unit is sealed and mixed thoroughly.
4. The pressure rise is directly proportional to the base
number.
3. TEST FOR KINEMATIC VISCOSITY
- This test is done by flow stick.
- In this we measure the relative flow between new and
old lub oils.
- Test.
1. The flow stick is filled with 3 ml new oil and 3 ml old
oil in each reservoir.
2. Tilt the flow stick.
3. When new oil reaches the reference mark.
4. check the corresponding position of old oil.
- If the old oil is before the reference line then it is
highly viscous and will be contaminated by heavy fuel oil.
- If the old oil is after the reference line then it is
less viscous and may be contaminated by light fuel oil.
4. TEST FOR DENSITY
- This method uses hydrometer to test the sample oil
density.
- It is important to keep hydrometer and oil at same
temperature.
5.
TEST FOR WATER CONTENT
- This test is carried out using calcium carbide.
- Test
1.
In this 5 ml oil is mixed with 15 ml of petroleum reagent ( paraffin, toluene).
2.
After through mixing then a measured amount of reagent ( calcium carbide) is placed on a floating cap.
3.
The test unit is sealed and thoroughly mixed.
- if water present acetylene gas is produced.
- The pressure rise due to the formation of this gas is
directly proportional to the water content.
